Cave of the Ogres

Back then you see—I wanted so much to be like Gwynevere’s handmaids. Those girls got to live freely and sleep with practically anyone they wanted to, once their chores were done and the queen had no further need of them. When they came tiptoeing back to their quarters in the wee hours of the morning, reeking of their torrid liaisons during the night, a happy Gwynevere was often right there to press them for the dirty details. I’d heard many of their stories and I would seethe with jealousy. Not that they were arrogant about it—indeed they gladly told me about their brazen exploits. It served to make life a little more tolerable, hearing them tell their sordid tales.

Ywedelle was my favorite among Gwynevere’s promiscuous servants. She practically wrote the book on how to work the system yet never get caught, never get in trouble for it, and never have to deal with a lovesick boyfriend trying desperately to woo her when she was done enjoying them. How she never seemed to get pregnant no one knew. But I adored her and loved her salacious stories. Ywedelle told me about how she operated and gave me plenty of ideas that I could try out myself. I unfortunately never seemed to get an opportunity.

Firstly, Ywedelle would shun any man who worked at the castle or lived in the nearby village. That was a dead end as far as she was concerned and fraught with potential drama when it was finally time to cut him off. No, she focused her attention solely on visiting squires and knights. She would seduce them carefully and meticulously; often getting several men interested in her, then put them off and put them off until it was nearly their last night or last week staying at the castle. Then she would go off with one or two of them to be alone. She’d enjoy their special talents in a hay barn, in a meadow, or perhaps out at the nearby lake on warmer days. It might be in the woods or in the back of a wagon. Ywedelle didn’t bother with details when it came to that. When the time was right she’d simply find a way to get her lover alone with her; and usually knew just where to go the moment she could tell the young man was on board with things.

When they were really good she’d see them night after night until they left the castle. When they were not, she’d cut them off quickly. To that end, she got very good at picking out just the right prospect from the crowd. She was from a tiny village in the north and I still remember some of her observations and tips on getting a man—as she described them to me in her charming accent:

“Sometimes, boys art dainty and don’t know how to approach a lady. Besides, most of the cocky ones that approach ye are not the type of man ya’ want to meet anyway.
